Marine & Wildlife

South African winter brings some of the most interesting wildlife encounters of the year, both above and below the surface.
Along the coast, winter is a time of movement in the ocean. Ragged-Tooth Sharks return to the reefs as part of their seasonal migration, with several often seen on a single dive. They are calm and slow-moving, and can often be found around caves, pinnacles, and reef structures, allowing for close encounters in the water.
But the Ragged-Tooth Sharks are only part of the winter story. The cooler months also bring Bull Sharks and Oceanic Blacktip Sharks into the area, while further offshore, Humpback Whales migrate along the coast.
As winter progresses, the first signs of the Sardine Run can also appear, bringing huge concentrations of baitfish and the predators that follow them.
Between these larger encounters, the reefs are full of life: rays, potato bass, reef fish, corals, and a surprising variety of smaller marine species.
On land, the dry winter months make for excellent game viewing. With shorter vegetation and animals gathering around water, we have the opportunity to search for White and Black Rhino, Elephant, Buffalo, Giraffe, Zebra, antelope, and a variety of predators.
Our safari experience takes us through some of KwaZulu-Natal’s most diverse wilderness, with a strong focus on both wildlife and conservation. We will spend time on game drives exploring different landscapes, looking for the Big Five, and learning more about the region’s important rhino conservation work.
Beyond the larger animals, we will also look for some of the more elusive species that are easy to miss. One of the special experiences of the trip is a pangolin tracking excursion, giving us the chance to learn about these incredibly rare animals and, with some luck, encounter one in the wild.
The exact encounters are never guaranteed, and that is part of the experience. Wildlife is constantly moving, and each day brings different conditions, different encounters, and the possibility of something unexpected.

The Journey

Meet your Expedition Leaders
Lena & Logan
This expedition is personally guided by us, Lena and Logan.
Together, we combine our passion for the ocean, wildlife, camping and authentic travel experiences.
Lena grew up in Kenya and has spent years living, studying, and working in different parts of the world. As an eco dive instructor, scientific diver and passionate traveler, she loves connecting people, cultures, wildlife, and meaningful experiences.
For Logan, South Africa is more than a destination, it is home.
Born and raised in South Africa, he spent much of his life exploring the bush and the country's wild coastline.
South Africa's underwater world is where he took his first steps as a dive professional and where his passion for sharing the ocean with others began.
Today, with thousands of dives and extensive experience throughout South Africa, he brings local knowledge, marine expertise, and a deep passion for sharing the places that shaped him.
Together, we bring two different perspectives to this journey, Lena's passion for connection, travel, and wildlife, and Logan's deep roots in South Africa's oceans and wild places.
This expedition is not only a journey through South Africa. It is a chance to experience a place that has shaped both of our stories and that we are excited to share with you.
